Why I did not buy me some Double Dragon

First off, congratulations to those who placed reservations early and got some DD's. Enjoy the big profit.

Because of my day job, Ive been aware of Double Dragon early. About two years ago, when I first saw their newly-built office in Ortigas, I thought the company's name is tacky and un-creative. I've played with the famous Nintendo game in the 80's--

I thought it was not right to name buildings after two musclemen punching, kicking, and wielding knives in low pixel.

There's also a chance that DD is just Injap's half-hearted attempt to find a place to put some of his windfall from the sale of Mang Inasal to Jollibee. He needs a company to spend his time on as well, since Jollibee executives have already taken over the day-to-day of Mang Inasal.  It is also hard to think of a newcomer properties company catching-up with the supreme landbanks already established by ALI, MEG, SMPH, and even the second liners like FLI and DMC.

It was late last year, during the time when DD applied for its intended IPO, that I discovered that Tony Tancaktiong was the 2nd dragon. One November to December, we also saw Tony disposing some Jollibee stocks, possibly to add to the war chest of DD, and emphasize his seriousness to support this co-venture.

In any case, I thought Injap, his consistent flat top, and persistence would still be the prime mover of the company. Everyone is saying that Injap can do to DD what he did with Mang Inasal.

I know that Mang Inasal became successful because Injap and MI--
1) found a niche (grilled chicken) and pushed it
2) he maintained the gross profit for his commissary so low to maintain the low selling price to end customers. Believe me when I say that the cost of operations and quirks in preparing Mang Inasal's chicken (with barbecue sticks and all) is more complicated compared to Chickenjoy. The risk on lapsing (the chicken is not shipped frozen, only chilled) is also high, and the suppliers limited (of chilled and dressed chicken in general). But all these considered, he stuck to pricing that's competitive against Cjoy. Mang Inasal commissary was not earning much from store operations.
3) Given the ruling objective to expand fast, he also maintained the franchise cost of MI very low. Any OFW can establish a store, and celebrities bought multiples as well. When Jollibee acquired Mang Inasal, many JFC managers are surprised to see a 95/5 franchise/company owned ratio. It got this way because of almost dirt-cheap franchise cost.
4) He is a marketer of his brand, and even of his own personality. There was a time that Injap accepted all invites for interviews and features in TV shows and magazines, however small. He espoused both Mang Inasal and his upbringing and wok ethic in these same venues. All franchise expos, he was also always present.
5) He's hands-on and wants to understand the ins-and-out of the operations of his company. Injap deep-dives on a particular aspect (like studies on store locations) if that's what's needed.

There was speculation (and there are reasons to believe this) that, early on when he was jumpstarting Mang Inasal's expansion, Injap's mother end-in-mind with Mang Inasal was to sell it to JFC. So the aim was to make Inasal very attractive for buyout, rather than to make it very profitable as his own business for long term. When JFC took over the books, annual operating income is not very attractive compared to other business units that the conglomerate already have (Chowking, Red Ribbon, Greenwich, et al).

Now the questions are: would selling again be the end-in-mind of Injap for DD? And how can he possibly apply these same strategies to properties? I thought that he will implement #1 (low cost) first. The apparent niche is probably condos in emerging provincial cities and lower-cost parts of Metro Manila. As is clear, Injap is willing to gamble very low margin for fast expansion. Small City Malls appear on the right track. But what about housing?

Of course we cannot personally visit their projects in Iloilo to confirm anything, so the best thing to check their first project in the Metro. This is the condo beside La Salle Taft. DD bought this from RFM.

I actually inquired at their sales office. I was presented with a 90% pre-sold units, 100% sold parking slots... these are expected since this project is already standing 7 years. The main thing though that I was interested in is the price. Considering #2 strategy and add to the consideration that the place is not in Ortigas or Makati, I was expecting the pricing at at least 20% off the going rate in business districts. But no, the place is still selling at 105 - 120 K PhP per sq. m., same with the pre-selling rates of RLC's projects in Ortigas (at same turnover dates!) Now, this might be because Injap wanted to recoup whatever purchase cost that he handed to RFM early. Even then, this is still one factor that dissuaded me.

I had the opportunity to buy as much as 50000 shares through channels available to me, because of my day job. But I gave it up also because of the 2 PhP pricing. I thought that P/B was too aggressive at that level. And during the time of offer, our market is just moving sideways with bias towards bearish.

Now, the pros that I shouldn't have ignored are the following:
1) the float being offered became very small especially after other members of the Tan family bought up chunks to support their kuya. The supply in this case became very small. Any up tick in demand will surely jack-up the price.
2) There's a chismis that Tony was 'encouraged' to let go of the CEO reins to his brother because of an extramarital affair with the Korean owner of Caffe Ti Amo, a company that JFC acquired. There might be doubt expressed by the board that his judgment on acquisitions is being mired by women at this time. And that Tony just wants to have something to be busy with after relinquishing his role as JFC's CEO. But in the end, I should have put more weight on the belief that Tony will not bet his money without having a say and having his own friends and confidante (who helped grow JFC). He wont get in to DD without confidence, and I should have entered DD with the same confidence.
3) And that Tony's own brand name is immediately a big attraction ( a 'brand' by this time) around the market.
4) That Injap's plan from the very start, this time around, is to have a listed, solid, and stable company under his name. And he will use his marketing savvy towards this goal, not in the same track as Mang Inasal. And that he have to show profit upfront; cant use the low-cost strategy at IPO (the PSE is not NASDAQ where technology companies can show losses yearly in exchange for growth prospects).

On hind sight, I should have taken half of what was readily available to me, or at least grabbed some shares at opening. I bet the same amount anyway on speculations with worse companies from time to time. But no regrets, since I made my decision based on factors that I considered and thought of fully.

And moving forward, Im now part of the cheerers of Double Dragon. I know the Tan brothers as humble, pays right, rationale thinkers, relies on professionals, and not short-changers to their employees and customers. I also dont care about Tony's one affair; there are worse CEO's in this area. And Im willing to bet that in his case, the Caffe Ti Amo girl was the one who pursued him, he just relented. A man can only resist temptations to a degree :- ). If that inadvertently allowed him more time in his hands, then DD will benefit his focus.

Injap, on the other hand, is persistent and diligent enough with his pursuits. We all hope he's still as hungry to succeed with this 2nd venture.

I intend to place a long-term position in Dragon once the price becomes stable. I'm going to be interested as well on their next projects in Manila that they will start from scratch (not just bought from RFM). I'd like to see a niche that DD will try to find and position to.

Go Double Dragon!

Formulate your action plan for longer, say the next 4 weeks

My suggestion is to change trading time frame and go 4-6 weeks. Suspend for the mean time the day-trade or 3-day time period. Choose your favorite companies, perhaps those that steadily gave you profits last May-June. Remember, their earnings remained steady as they are--except the banks that lost big in trading (after foreign money pulled-out en masse) and the companies that borrowed heavily in dollars early this year.

There's a theory that the stocks that were not as affected and not too up-and-down shaky during the down turn will also become the first ones jumping in the upturn. PGOLD, JFC, AGI, are three of these stocks. I placed my bet on AGI. If you want to align with this theory, do a quick look at the graphs of all the PSEi stocks and some second liners. Find the one which did not dip too low and did not oscillate too wide.

MEG, although dumped by foreigners in July-August,was heavily bought up again yesterday. It can become the reliable stalwart again. In fact if this becomes a steady hand , the whole index would also be comfortably steady in its upturn. MEG is now moved on the first page of my watchlist, a candidate for adding-up.

AC and MER were also steadily-increasing index stocks before the QE tapering news. They also deserve some focus.

The banks are being bought up by foreign funds again. Search a bank of your own if you still have funds to allocate. Also dont forget dividend paying and those with low P/E, remember those metrics are also being looked at by fund managers.

Half of my holdings in MBT was hit at previously-set 88.5, all remaining GTCAP was also hit at 840 (previously set), as well as tranches in VLL, even before I got the chance to open FMS or BPITrade. Im suddenly 50% cash when I started checking the market. I bought one tranche in JGS and AEV to release some cash. Only AEV was the bad pick, but Im betting this will recover today.

By the way, thank you GTCAP for being a good pick of the week. Although youre not a favorite by locals, you gave me profit 3 times around.

I don't agree with the early profit taking done by our fellow locals late in the morning and late closing. (My own mistake was in not taking time opening PC at home to cancel all sell orders before the market opened). The FED tapering was the most important concern, since we were relieved by that then our market will probably be allowed its "natural" trend, which should be up given the rosy corporate earnings and braggable GDP growth. Im not privy though on the emotions of our fellow pinoys that sold big yesterday (see COL selling figures). They might be shell-shocked new investors  that want to just want exit out unscathed or recover some of the losses.

And yes, the "relief" is only good until November 1.The FOMC will meet again Oct 29-30. By the time we go back on trading again on November 4, there could be a firm announcement on the amount of tapering that will happen within the year.

But at least Ben Bernanke now  laid out more certainty. He said that tapering will not start if US unemployment wont go down below 6.5%. So that's also a number to watch out in the news for.

Now, how would we know when to sell?
1) check the trend. If still going up or above the SMA lines, let your profits run, and MACD histogram trending up or stable.
2) but i'll be comfortable selling at 12% gain. (My current MEG and MBT are already showing 8%)
3) sell when you see the  US unemployment improve to way below 6.5%
4) sell before All Saints day break.
(strong sell if there's combination of the 4 conditions)

And dont forget to read news daily. For instance, you would not know there's another bacman bad news in EDC if you dont read the news for a few minutes.

Sugod!

Market Skim Through, 14 August 2013. SUN shone on those who saw the disclosure early. SUN Sisters benefit. JFC is a mutant!

Another good, invigorating day for the market. Overall index increase was +1.56%, crossing the 20-day SMA, to 6600+, at a another respectable 7 B PhP trading volume.

SUN ended at that rare ceiling price, because of a disclosed stock rights offering, to be set at a price of 1 PhP. There was no rumor or premonition to the upcoming rights; SUN's board is perhaps commendable for guarding the plan, keeping it secret until after board approval. Those who were focused on the PSE website for disclosures, and was able to catch the disclosure early, and got in early in SUN, deserved the gain. More so those who were already invested before hand.

I think SUN  will continue to go up tomorrow and should easily breach 0.9 PhP. 0.95 would be probable; while above 1 PhP would be remarkable (many would sell to take profit at 0.95 above). I havent and wont participate in SUN, because of its tarnished heritage. It's still the former BW Resources, raised by thieves that almost brought our entire economy down.  I still believe Andrew Tan shouldn't have bought SUN.

But in any case, Andrew Tan seems mind the performance of his stocks and also does not disregard the small investors. His rights and follow-on offering are placed not at a steep discount (unlike SMC, ICT, ABS, SM, et al  have done recently), but more often at a plus premium (like what he did for GERI and MEG recently).

Probably due to the ceiling-move and goodwill from SUN, sisters GERI, MEG, and ELI also have shown significant increases. And then mother ship AGI surged +4+%.

JFC, on the other hand, continues to show its mutant ability, and jumped even higher today. It disregarded already the downtrend of the past several weeks and now, since last week, is showing 52-week highs day-after-day, seemingly without any resistance. Its P/E is already at 40 (even higher than AC), but still not showing any weakness. Foreigners are participating in the buying. I will write a whole entry about JFC (close to my heart) within next week.

SM and group also continued their recovery.

And then CPG continued its uptrend. It was a good buy two days ago (good call by James K Nava). If youre able to enter art 1.22 or 1.23, best to take profit already.

Those watching in the sidelines, again, should reduce their cash position and enter on issues after doing their own personal research. If you need it, I have posted some suggested stocks, in recent posts, for you to look at, but most of them admittedly already went up considerably. You can also develop a strategy of your own. One input that Ive read is to check which hasnt increased significantly the past two days. Those stocks could be good candidates, because if the market goes into confirmed uptrend, every fundamentally-good company should go up.

Market Skim Through: August 06, Are they really bargains?

PSE index tumbled down -1.37%, but many are still thankful because it was nearing -2.0% earlier in the day. PSEi is going deeper below its short-term moving averages, so chartists indeed exited in the morning. But many funds clicked buy in the afternoon, which also brought the volume to a decent 5.95 volume. Foreigners were net sellers mostly because they continue to unload Sy stocks, but these funds also bought some index issues like MEG, which recovered to positive.

AP and MWC are in the list of worst performers, because of separate news items. AP, because supposed to be power will be the first to get hit by impending rising interest rates. The company's latest earnings report is also not too good compared to last year because of forex losses. MWC, on the other hand, is still threatened by a possible new policy of disallowing them to pass on VAT to consumers. (Changing the rules in the middle of the game = always bad for business).

Albeit the perceived low prices... Cash is still my pick of the week. However it is still useful to ruminate on these:

Sy Stocks are battered. What among BDO, BEL, SMPH, SM, SMDC are now bargains? BEL has potential I think as we near December. Gaming stocks should jump very high as it nears the opening of a new casino. BDO is a bargain at 10 p/e. The rest must find their bottom.

MPI, although it entered my previously declared price entry range,  I wasnt able to get in at 4.93 this morning (conflict with a meeting). Might have another chance within the week?

I added a tranche of MBT at 103.5; thankfully it rose to 105 + in the afternoon. This stock might be a good opportunity to profitably range trade again. Im keeping my substantial position. I also reentered BDO after cutting a small loss yesterday. The bank also recovered decently today, already showing me a bit of profit. But all these are gambles, mind ya.
There's a fighting chance that our market will be green tomorrow. JFC piled on good, confident numbers (and a relatively high divs announcement at that!) to encourage our PSE to show some life. Could be the needed antidote to what SM prompted.

Depending on you appetite for risk, you may get in or not. If you decide to get in, I cant over-emphasize the better-for-risk move of buying in tranches. Do not go all-in. Buy staggered.

If you decide to be on the sidelines, youre aligned with an experienced group of Ghost Month believers. (the month officially starts tomorrow and ends September 4). But would not hurt to be on the lookout for strong companies that are perhaps being sold-off by locals but becoming interesting for foreign brokers.

Good luck!
